For just the third time ever, the Houston Texans will host the Detroit Lions in a regular season matchup.
Having only met six times overall, the two are polar opposites when it comes to their placement in the league. Detroit hails from the ever-competitive NFC North, while Houston is a member of the less-threatening AFC South.
They are alike, however, in that they each occupy the top spot in their respective divisions, including one of the top four playoff seeds at the moment. With just under half the season left to play, matchups like this can have a significant impact on a team’s season.

The 6-3 Texans are coming off their second loss in three games, losing 21-13 to Aaron Rodgers’ Jets on Halloween over a week ago. Second-year slinger C.J. Stroud had one of his worst performances so far, completing just 11-of-30 passes for 191 yards and no scores.
Houston’s offensive line allowed eight sacks — the most in a single game this season — and running back Joe Mixon punched in the team’s lone touchdown late in the second frame. Stroud threw no interceptions, though, and the Texans collected more total yards than New York on the same number of drives. The issue was scoring in the red zone, which Stroud & Co. were only able to do once on four tries.
Super Bowl favorites at this point, the Lions own the top seed in the NFC with a conference-best 7-1 record — second only to the AFC West’s Chiefs. Detroit’s loss came in Week 2 against Baker Mayfield’s Bucs at home, a team with one of the best offenses in the league this season.
Dan Campbell’s squad is coming off a win over the Packers at Lambeau Field. Fringe MVP candidate Jared Goff posted a 97.7 QB rating, completing 26 passes for 246 yards and two touchdowns.
Detroit also added a weapon before the trade deadline to replace the injured Aidan Hutchinson, trading for three-time Pro Bowl edge rusher Za’Darius Smith from the Browns. He will make his debut for the Lions on Sunday in Houston.

8:42 p.m. — LIONS PUNT. A flag flies just after the ball is snapped the next play, and Detroit is called for delay of game. Now third-and-long at the 25, Goff hits LaPorta for nine but it’s not enough to save the drive. Detroit will punt deep in its own half with 7:08 on the clock.
8:40 p.m. — Fairbarn boots it for a touchback, and Goff will start with it on the 30. Montgomery rushes for no gain as Pitre takes him down, then the QB can’t find Williams deep up the middle. The ball is nearly intercepted, bringing up third-and-ten.
8:36 p.m. — THE TEXANS ARE ON THE BOARD! Stroud hands it off to Mixon, who takes it around the left edge with a sea of green in front of him. The RB scores his seventh rushing touchdown of the year and Fairbarn’s kick is good. Houston is up seven with 7:46 in the first.

8:32 p.m. — Mixon takes two carries for no gain, then Stroud finds Dell for a 13 yard gain to save the drive. Now at the Lions 20 with a first down, Mixon powers forward for two more into the red zone.
8:30 p.m. — INTERCEPTION HOUSTON! Goff’s pass intended for Gibbs is tipped on the bubble and picked off by Ward, who is taken down at the Detroit 33. Stroud will get his first snap just outside the red zone with 12:55 on the clock.

8:25 p.m. — Goff’s first pass is a rare incompletion, then Gibbs takes it for five to bring up third down. St. Brown makes the first catch of the game off a pitch from Goff in the backfield, running it off the left edge for a first down at the Lions 42.
