FOX 2 – Change is inevitable in life – and of course the NFL. The Lions, after the best regular season in NFL history, and a two assistant coaches in high demand are likely to experience their own dose of it.
Lions Coach Dan Campbell expects both Aaron Glenn and Ben Johnson to head coaching jobs, he said on Monday.
“I would expect to lose both, but I haven’t been told anything,” he said. “I’ve got a feeling, but I’m prepared to lose both.”
Big picture view:
Glenn and Johnson have been contacted for various head coach openings around the league, and with the Lions now eliminated from the post-season, the interest is expected to only ramp up.
Monday morning published reports have Glenn, the defensive coordinator, set to have a second interview with the New York Jets. He is scheduled to meet in person with the New Orleans Saints on Wednesday.
On Monday, various reports are linking Johnson and Chicago Bears, which are expected to finalize a deal for the head coach position with him.
Campbell says no matter what happens, he’ll always be thankful for their work, citing them as major reasons for the team’s success the last four years.
“We came out of the dump and got to where we’re at. So, man, I will forever be grateful for those guys and our team,” he said. “Is it a loss? Absolutely. But yet man, we move forward. This train rolls on and I’ll find the next best guys for us. We want it to be seamless, that transition, if it happens.
“That’s my job is to replenish and find the next man up, and the guy who’s who’s going to give us the best chance to have success on both sides of the ball.”
One challenge will be weighing between internal and external candidates to fill the positions, he said. In many ways, he compared to finding the best player available for the job who fits the role – but who also clicks with the existing culture.
But don’t expect the Lions to assume a new identity anytime soon. Campbell says they know who they are.
“No, I don’t see philosophy changing … I know what we are,” he said. “So does that mean a couple of things get tweaked? You know, a couple of things will get tweaked, (as) just the nature of having new coordinators, if that happens. You know, because you want it to be their, their flavor, their style with it. But yet what I want is what we’re going to do.”
If one or both do get hired in the near term, don’t look for Campbell and General Manager Brad Holmes to move quickly for a replacement.
“You know, I’m not in a mad dash – no matter what happens,” he said. “I want to do what’s right by our team. (Someone who) will be able to stand in front of that room and command respect and get everybody going in the same direction, and we’ll we’ll ultimately deliver the same message that I’m, I’m delivering.”
