A lingerie distributor is shutting down its facility in south Alabama, according to a recent notice filed with the state.
Vanity Fair Distribution Center distributes Vanity Fair Lingerie apparel – a brand owned by Fruit of the Loom, Inc. – at its Monroeville warehouse. Its closure, scheduled for April 28, will result in 156 layoffs, per the WARN notice.
A receptionist for Vanity Fair Distribution Center referred a reporter to the Fruit of the Loom corporate office. Representatives at Fruit of the Loom did not return requests for comment.
But Monroeville Mayor Charles Andrews told WKRG that the facility is closing because Fruit of the Loom is reducing its workforce.
Federal law requires large employers to file a public WARN notice with the state 60 days in advance of mass layoffs or plant closures. Those WARN notices are published by the Alabama Department of Commerce.
The expected job cuts bring Alabama’s tally on employees impacted by mass layoffs already scheduled for 2025 to roughly 1,650.
The Monroeville/Monroe County Chamber of Commerce said in an announcement the distribution center employed more than 180 workers, as of June 2024.
Vanity Fair has operated in Monroeville for decades, first opening a textile plant where workers sewed silk stockings and lingerie in Monroeville in 1937, according to Southern Changes: The Journal of the Southern Regional Council.
In 2007, VF Corp. sold its intimate apparel business to Fruit of the Loom for $350 million.
