Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James isn’t ready to retire yet, but he does seem to have one eye on his post-NBA future.
James, 39, is preparing to begin his 22nd NBA season, which begins Oct. 22. However, the four-time NBA champion and four-time MVP noted he’s interested in sports broadcasting post-retirement, be it in basketball or football.
“I definitely love the sport,” James said during an appearance on the GoJo and Golic podcast. “I love basketball. I love football. And I watch it, not only as a fan but breaking down matchups and things of that nature.
“I was brought into sports. When you grow up in northeast Ohio, you grow up in sports. It would be great. I see Tom Brady doing it, he’s been great so far. We will see. Even if it’s just a guest appearance, one game or two when I’m done playing. It’s always fun to give back to the game,” he added.

James, a 20-time NBA All-Star, signed a two-year, $104 million contract extension with the Lakers in July. The contract is essentially a one-plus-one deal, with James having a player option for the 2025-26 NBA season. Hours after James signed his extension with the Lakers, the team signed his son, Bronny James Jr., after drafting him out of USC in the second round of the 2024 NBA Draft.
Earlier this year in February, LeBron acknowledged that his retirement from the NBA is coming sooner than later.
“I don’t know how it’s going to end, but it’s coming. It’s coming, for sure,” he told reporters ahead of the 2024 NBA All-Star Game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. “I have not mapped out how many seasons I have left. I know it’s not that many.”
The Akron, Ohio, native has played 11 of his 21 NBA seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers, which drafted him first overall in the 2003 NBA Draft. He played his first seven seasons in Cleveland before joining the Miami Heat, where he won two NBA championships in four seasons from 2010 to 2014. James re-joined the Cavaliers in July 2014 and led the team to four consecutive NBA Finals appearances from 2015 to 2018 – all against the Golden State Warriors – including winning the 2016 NBA championship.
