LeBron James offers his unfiltered response to Luka Doncic potentially extending his NBA career.
The Los Angeles Lakers are ushering in a new era following the shocking Luka Doncic for Anthony Davis trade with the Dallas Mavericks.
Amid the chaos, LeBron James’ future has been one of the biggest concerns for the Laker Nation.
At 40 years old, James remains a top-notch player, but Father Time is slowly yet surely catching up to the King. After all, he missed his first NBA All-Star game for the first time in two decades.
Averaging 24.3 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 9.0 assists per game in Year 22 has never been before in the NBA. But James is making it look easy.
Despite those numbers, there have been times when James has looked a bit slow, which has led to many questioning his intentions of hanging up the sneakers for good. But has that changed with Doncic’s arrival? James offered his unfiltered take on it.
“No, I have not given it that type of thought. Just the excitement of being able to add a caliber player like that, a generational talent like that to our franchise, it’s something that’s given me energy,” James said.
On one hand, it’s good that James isn’t giving much thought to his NBA future, be it in a good or bad manner as it feels like he is focused on potentially winning the fifth NBA title of his career this season.
On the other hand, could it be a sign that despite Doncic’s arrival in LA, James plans to retire soon? Only time will tell.
So far, the Lakers have attained a 1-1 record with Doncic on the roster. Considering the 25-year-old was visibly rusty, he is yet to show his true potential to the City of Angels.
Even LBJ is excited to build a fulfilling partnership with Luka Magic post the All-Star break.
“I’m looking forward to seeing what we can do. We only had two games so far, and I believe he’s been on a minutes restriction since he came back from the calf. He hasn’t played since Christmas, I believe,” James continued.
He concluded: “As he continues to get in form, I think we could be really good going down the stretch. But we’ll see what happens.”
There is no doubt that Doncic was in desperate need of this mental break after the dramatic trade to the LA Lakers.
While he may be in a better place mentally after the All-Star break, it will likely take him a few more games to get back to peak game condition.
Fortunately for Doncic, the Lakers remain the fifth seed in the Western Conference, which will allow him the time to get back in proper shape before the postseason.
