The Los Angeles Lakers won their first game of the 2024-25 NBA season, defeating the Minnesota Timberwolves 110-103 on Tuesday night. Anthony Davis led the way for the Lakers with 36 points.
In the game, LeBron James made history when his son, Bronny, checked into the game, becoming the first father and son to play together in the NBA. Bronny played only three minutes and missed his only two shots, but it was a magical and historical night for the NBA.
James also broke an NBA record, although he would likely prefer the focus to be on his son. Five minutes into the second half, James missed a layup. It was the 14,482nd missed shot of his career, putting him above Kobe Bryant for the most missed shots in NBA history.
Interestingly, it took James 3,129 more attempts to beat Bryant’s record, which is a testament to the efficiency with which he scores. Bryant was a career 44.7% shooter, while James has made 50.6% of his career field goal attempts.
In order to miss at such a high level, James had to have the trust of his coaches and teammates to shoot so many shots. His 29,329 career attempts are more than 1,000 ahead of second-place Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who is also second all-time on the NBA’s scoring leaderboard.
As James continues his illustrious career, many of his records will appear to be unbreakable, and it will take another all-time great, who likely hasn’t even started his career, to rival James’ scoring and shooting records.
