FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) – With Labor Day coming up this weekend, many Alaskans might be traveling for an end-of-summer getaway. If these plans include traveling with a loved one who has dementia, a bit of planning ahead of time can make the whole process much easier.
First, ensure travel plans are as simple and easy as possible. Try to eliminate stressful factors like tight connections and excessive stops. Even though the party might feel tempted to fill the trip with destinations and attractions, remember the key words are comfort and ease. Instead, focus on creating quality memories, rather than rushing through as many sights as possible.
The way each party goes about eliminating stressors might look different depending on their means of transportation. If taking a plane, inform the airlines of any particular safety concerns or special needs, and try to find quiet places to rest in the airport. If taking a road trip, schedule regular break times for food, rest, and bathroom visits.
Also, plan around the person’s own abilities and routine. Many people with dementia can feel overwhelmed by the smallest of changes, so any aspect of their regular routine that can be preserved, will help. For example, if they are used to eating at specific times, write it into the schedule.
Stock up on any comfort items before leaving that might help as well. These might include a favorite sweater, snacks or easy-to-pack games. It is also important to bring a list of current medications and health documentation.
If you have further questions, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America has resources on their website, and also a helpline where you can speak with a licensed social worker at 866-232-8484.
