Grade 3 winner Somethinabouther headlines a competitive group of 12 3-year-old fillies, plus one also-eligible, entered in next Friday’s 43rd running of the $175,000 Cincinnati Trophy Stakes at Turfway Park.
Run at one mile, the Cincinnati Trophy is carded as race 7 with a post time of 8:55 p.m. EST. First post is 5:55 p.m. The Cincinnati Trophy awards 20-10-6-4-2 qualifying points to the top five finishers toward a spot in the starting gate for the Grade 1, $1.5 million Kentucky Oaks on Friday, May 2, at Churchill Downs.
Trained by Brendan Walsh, Somethinabouther makes her season debut following a determined victory in the Mazarine Stakes (G3) at Woodbine over the Tapeta surface. Jockey Declan Cannon, who was aboard for that win, will travel from his winter base at Fair Grounds to retain the mount from post No. 6.
Somethinabouther is one of three fillies Walsh entered in the race. The others are Mazarine fourth-place finisher Salt and local maiden special-weight winner Wonderous, who needs one defection to make the body of the field.
Although Somethinabouther is the most accomplished filly in the race, several promising newcomers look to add a stakes victory to their resume, including highly regarded maiden special-weight winner Girl Math; Presque Isle Debutante winner and Mazarine Stakes beaten favorite Foxtastic; two-time Turfway Park winner Admit; dominant 4 1/4-length allowance winner Just Ruthless and recent six-length maiden special-weight winner White Rocks.
The Cincinnati Trophy is the local prep toward the $300,000 Bourbonette Oaks, run on the undercard of the March 22, $777,000 Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3).
