When the Kentucky men’s basketball team isn’t on the practice court at the Joe Craft Center, the players are finding themselves on the golf course. They arrived for move-in with clubs and have certainly made use of them — Kerr Kriisa broke the head off of his driver on the first tee box at Keene Trace earlier this summer, among many visits.
The Wildcats brought the UK Sports Video team with them on a recent trip to film the (few) highs and (many) lows for the squad from top to bottom. And as Trent Noah made clear, it was pretty easy to single out the regulars compared to the newbies.
He fit the latter category.
“We’ve definitely seen who has golfed and who hasn’t before. That’s for sure,” the freshman wing said. “I’m one of them that hasn’t, but hopefully I’ll get into it soon and redeem myself.”
Who are the standouts? A few clear ones have emerged, led by Travis Perry — a Kentucky Golf Coaches Association Second-Team All-Region 1 Team member and region title winner in high school.
“Travis, I’d say Travis is the best golfer,” Noah added. “Collin (Chandler) and Andrew (Carr) are good as well, from what I’ve seen. Kerr (Kriisa) was good. I’d say those four are at the top of the pack and then there is a little bit of a drop-off.”
He may not be the best golfer, but Noah nailed the team assessment. See for yourself in the 10-minute clip shared by UK Athletics on Wednesday.
Golf has been a popular topic in recent media sessions, Perry sharing the same standouts last week while avoiding throwing anyone under the bus.
“Andrew Carr is pretty good. Kerr is pretty good. Collin is pretty good. I think it was actually the first time Trent played, and he was on my team yesterday,” he said. “He was pretty solid. Everybody did alright. It was a lot of fun, for sure.
“We love playing golf. Golf is a sport that we all think you can have fun, even if you suck at it, honestly. So, we have good days and bad days out there.”
It’s a sport certain to humble you, as Kriisa found out the hard way when his driver head snapped off.
“I think it’s a good way to kind of get your mind off everything and just go out there, enjoy the weather, mingle with your teammates,” Kriisa added. “Golf is just such a humble sport. You hit an amazing drive, and then your next shot is trash. So, it’s a very humbling sport, and I think it’s a good hobby to have for me and for my teammates and it’s been fun.”
Who is up for a team golf scramble ahead of college basketball season? Maybe a contest for NIL money? I’m sure Big Blue Nation would be happy to participate.
