Somerset (Ky.) High School installed a new field turf for its football stadium in recent years, and it came with an extra perk.
Behind one end zone, the Briar Jumpers installed a miniature football field available for kids to play on during varsity games. The mini-field stretches 30 yards in length and runs perpendicular to the full-size field.
This season, Somerset has a 6-3 record with a final regular season matchup against Glasgow on deck. The Briar Jumpers are then scheduled to open the postseason at home against Owen County.
Somerset has played just one top-50 team in Kentucky this year according to the On3 Massey Ratings. They lost to No. 50 Campbellsville 34-21 on Sept. 20. The Briar Jumpers are currently ranked as a top-100 team in the state.
The On3 Massey Ratings — which were officially used during the BCS era and have generated college high school sports team rankings since 1995 — rank sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule and margin of victory.
