First Resort, who won the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club at Churchill Downs in his last start Nov. 30, worked a bullet at Turfway on Monday morning. His five-furlong time of 59.4 seconds was fastest of 10 over the distance. It was his fifth work since his graded-stakes victory and the third since a one-month gap in drills between late December and late January.
Trained by Eoin Harty, First Resort is a Godolphin homebred by Uncle Mo out of the Grade 1-winning mare Fair Maiden, whom Harty also trained for Godolphin. First Resort broke his maiden on debut in July 5 in a dirt sprint at Ellis Park and ran second in the Saratoga Special (G2) behind Showcase. His only off-the-board finish came when he was fourth in the Summer Stakes (G1) on the Woodbine lawn.
As of Sunday First Resort was 50-1 in the Kentucky Derby futures book at Caesars in Las Vegas. That lengthened from 45-1 the week before. The price in Las Vegas is similar to his closing price in the third Kentucky Derby Future Wager, which ended Jan. 19. In that pool, First Resort closed at 49-1.
