It’s still nearly six months until Kentucky Derby 2025, but you have to start somewhere.
With six points preps, including the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, having been run, now seems like as good a time as any to take a first look at the points standings for the run for the roses.
The first five races on the Kentucky Derby trail offered 10-5-3-2-1 points to the top five finishers, and that will continue to be the case for the next seven qualifiers, going through the Lecomte (G3) in January. But breaking up that string was the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, with 30-15-9-6-3 points on the line.
And that’s why Citizen Bull is on top of the leaderboard. Not only did he win the Juvenile, but he picked up another 10 points for his victory in the American Pharoah (G1). Gaming’s 15 points for second place in the Juvenile puts him in second in the standings as well.
Bob Baffert, who is eligible to have Kentucky Derby runners again, has the top three horses on the list, as Getaway Car has 11 points from his fourth-place finish in the Juvenile and runner-up effort in the American Pharoah.
Next up on the Derby trail is the Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) on Nov. 30, followed by the Remsen (G2) on Dec. 7. Click here for a full list of Derby prep races and points earners.
