HINCKLEY, Ohio – Oakland Men’s Golf earns first place finish at Tom Tontimonia Invitational shooting 7 under par as a team. Luke Kelly also claims the individual title after a two-hole playoff.
After a delayed start Monday due to weather, the Golden Grizzlies kicked off the first round with a strong showing. Through the first round the Golden Grizzlies found themselves in the lead after shooting 68 (-4). Individual Ben Willis led all Golden Grizzlies with a first round total of 68 (-3). Luke Kelly led the team with a first round showing of 69. Robert Burns contributed to the team after he posted a 70 (-2) shot total for round one.
Due to the weather and course conditions, the invitational would only include two rounds. Despite the weather, the team continued to separate themselves from the rest of the pack.
Tuesday morning was no different for the Golden Grizzlies. The Golden Grizzlies continued their success, posting a shot total of 69 (-3) in the round. This brought them to -7 at the completion of both rounds. Luke Kelly continued his success with a second round total of 70 (-2). Zack Zubkus posted an impressive second round, shooting 69 (-3).
The Golden Grizzlies finished with three top-ten individual finishes. Luke Kelly was crowned the Tom Tontimonia Invitational Individual Champion after winning a two-hole playoff. Kelly finished the second round shooting 135 (-5). This is Kelly’s first individual win of his career. Zack Zubkus finished third overall with 136 (-4) and Burns finished eighth after shooting 140 (E).
This marks the first team win of the fall. The Oakland Men’s Golf team finished first out of nine teams competing in the field shooting 553 (-7) over two rounds. The team finished the weekend 12 strokes ahead of second place, showing a dominant command of the weekend from start to finish.
The Golden Grizzlies are back on the road again this upcoming weekend as they travel to USC Upstate for the Carolina Cup in Spartanburg, SC. They look to continue the success they have had at both the Golden Grizzlies Invitational and Tom Tontimonia Invitational.
