Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Scott Tolzien is being hired as the New Orleans Saints’ new quarterbacks coach. Sorry, Chase Daniel.
Kellen Moore has yet to name his offensive coordinator, but he is filling out the positional coaches. This isn’t Tolzien and Moore’s first rodeo together. When Moore was the offensive coordinator with the Dallas Cowboys, Tolzien was a coaching assistant from 2020 to 2022. Before that, Tolzien worked as a backup in the NFL from 2011 to 2017.
After Moore became the Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator, the Cowboys promoted Tolzien to quarterbacks coach. It’s worth noting that in Tolzien’s first year as quarterbacks coach, Dak Prescott finished second in the MVP race.
2023 was easily one of Prescott’s better seasons in the league. Prescott led the NFL in touchdowns and had his lowest interception percentage since his rookie year. Notably, Prescott’s 55 carries for 242 yards displayed a willingness and ability to run he hadn’t showcased since fractured his ankle in 2020.
When Moore and Tolzien were together, Prescott returned from his ankle fracture to record arguably his best statistical season of his career. The following year, Tony Pollard had the best year of his career.
A running back and quarterback who had career years under two of your offensive leaders is reason to be hopeful for the development of the Saints’ young talent.
