LA QUINTA, Calif. – The Kansas men’s golf team used under-par rounds from Luke Honner and Gunnar Broin to maintain their spot on the leaderboard in second place at -5 after the second round of The Prestige on Tuesday.
“We played solid today but probably left a few out there,” said Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel. “We had a few sloppy bogeys and doubles, especially on the par-5 16th. We probably got a little unlucky with the weather but we have been on the other side of the draw and got lucky so it all evens out.”
The Jayhawks were led by junior transfer Luke Honner, who tied his lowest 18-hole score as a Jayhawk with a three-under round of 68. Senior Gunnar Broin was right behind him with a two-under 69.
“Really proud of Luke Honner the first two rounds,” Bermel added. “He actually broke his driver shaft on Friday, got it replaced and broke it again. It didn’t faze him and he played well today. Gunnar is Gunnar and he does his thing – pretty steady and does a lot of things well out there. Max (Jelinek) has played solid and is really chipping and putting much better.”
Bermel’s Jayhawks shot a one-over 285 in the second round after opening the event with a six-under 278 on Monday. After 36 holes, the Jayhawks sit in second place in the 24-team tournament. Kansas is six shots back of San Diego, who lead the tournament at -11. Northwestern (-4), Little Rock (-4) and Princeton (-3) round out the top five heading into the final round of play.
Honner started his round playing steady golf, carding seven pars on his way to a front nine 35 (E). Honner started to heat up on the back nine, going three under in his first three holes, which included an eagle on the 12th hole, a 566-yard par five. Honner shot a 68, finishing the day at -3, putting him in a tie for 8th place for the tournament at -4. Honner’s 68 ties his lowest round as a Jayhawk.
Broin, like Honner, remained consistent through the first nine holes, ending the front side at one under par. He then picked up three additional birdies on the back nine, finishing the second round with a two-under 69. Broin now sits at -3 for the tournament, currently in a tie for 11th. Tuesday’s round marked his seventh score in the 60’s this season, tying his season high. Broin also had seven rounds in the 60’s for the 2022-23 season, his first as a Jayhawk.
Max Jelinek played steady golf throughout the second round of the tournament, carding 12 pars and three birdies to shoot a one over 72. Jelinek sits in a tie for 33rd place after the second round at even par for the tournament.
Ty Lasley continued to gather pars, collecting eight pars and three birdies, including two birdies on par threes in the second round, to card a 76. Lasley is in a tie for 96th place at eight over par for the tournament.
After opening the tournament with a three under 68, Holtzman followed up with an 81 and sits in a tie for 88th place at +7, respectively.
“We’ve got a big day on Wednesday but that is the exact reason we compete,” Bermel said ahead of Wednesday’s final round. “We need all five guys playing well and competing on every hole.”
