LA QUINTA, Calif. – Kansas Men’s Golf finished up play Wednesday afternoon at The Prestige tournament at PGA West, taking seventh place with a final score of 851 (-1).
Kansas relied on steady performances from junior Luke Honner, sophomores Max Jelinek and Noah Holtzman, and freshman Ty Lasley to keep themselves near the top of the leaderboard. The Jayhawks carded a final round score of 288, good for four over par to wrap up their spring opener.
“Disappointing day today on the golf course,” said Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel. “We played sloppy golf and we paid the price in a really good field. It was perfect weather today and we just didn’t respond. We will get this figured out and hopefully the next time we are in that spot we respond. Luke had a good week and Ty played solid for his first event as a Jayhawk.”
San Diego claimed the team title with a score of -29, a 16-shot margin of victory over second place Texas Tech (-13). Northwestern (-11), Little Rock (-10) and Colorado (-7) rounded out the top five of the leaderboard.
Honner was an example of steady golf for Kansas, as he tallied 12 pars, including a stretch of five in a row to open his final round. Honner would find three birdies during Wednesday’s round but ended up carding an even-par 71. Honner finished the tournament in a tie for 13th with a total score of 209 (-4).
Jelinek continued his steady play as well, finishing his final round with a one over par 72. That theme would remain consistent with Jelinek, as he finished the tournament at one over par as well. Jelinek ended The Prestige tied for 43rd after shooting 214 (+1).
Gunnar Broin ended the tournament shooting 216 (+3). Despite gathering 13 pars in the final round, Broin shot a 77 (+6) to end the tournament in a tie for 47th place.
Lasley ended his first tournament in the lineup starting hot by marking a par on nine of his first 10 holes. Lasley would find two birdies on the back nine on his way to shooting a one-over-par score of 72. Lasley finished the tournament at nine over par, with a total score of 219, which landed him in a tie for 86th place.
Holtzman was another Jayhawk to finish the tournament at nine over par. He bounced back strong on Wednesday afternoon, carding a final-round 73 (+2). Holtzman closed out the tournament with seven pars and three birdies over his last ten holes. Holtzman finished the tournament in a tie for 86th place.
