Josh Bookbinder on Texas Tech football’s linebackers learning rugby tackling techniques.
Josh Bookbinder, the Texas Tech football inside linebackers coach and a charter member of Joey McGuire’s staff, is leaving the program, according to a report.
Football Scoop reported Monday that Bookbinder “shared today that he will not be returning to TTU and is seeking his next position.” A Tech athletics spokesman confirmed Bookbinder is not expected to return. His two-year contract expires Jan. 31, and Tech will honor it through the duration, the spokesman said.
Bookbinder was one of several young Baylor staff members whom McGuire brought to Lubbock after he took the Tech head-coaching job in November 2021. He’s been the position coach for Jacob Rodriguez, the Big 12 leader in tackles this season, and Ben Roberts, who had 107 and 83 tackles, respectively, as a redshirt freshman and sophomore the past two years.
Rodriguez earned first-team all-Big 12 recognition this season, and last year Roberts was second-team all-Big 12 and a freshman all-America honoree by the Football Writers Association of America.
A defensive staff shakeup isn’t unexpected given that new defensive coordinator Shiel Wood has spent much of his career coaching inside linebackers or safeties.
