PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia 76ers have yet to see Joel Embiid take the floor for them in the 2024-25 season as he continues to work his way back from the knee injury that caused him to miss two months in the 2023-24 season.
Embiid is at a point in his career where he wants to make sure he is 100% healthy and sure that he is good to go before he takes the floor again. He has played through a ton of injuries such as two orbital injuries, a torn thumb ligament, multiple knee injuries, and a slew of others. He is taking this time to fully rest up before he takes the court again.
Here is the latest on Embiid:
When the Sixers take on the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday, they will be Embiid-less again as the big fella continues to recover and progress. The good news is that he did return to practice on Tuesday as a full participant meaning he played in 5-on-5 live competition. That means the big fella is inching closer to a return to the floor.
Embiid stated at practice:
“I think really it’s being comfortable. Trusting it. I think just being out there, I wanna be at my best. I don’t wanna be in a situation where I’m afraid if I do this, I might do something or whatever. I mentioned it since the last surgery. I mentioned it so many times, it was probably the toughest mentally, and I think mentally, I’m just dealing with getting that trust back. In the past, it was easy, but for some reason, this one, it’s like mentally, just trusting yourself, trusting your body, and I think that’s really what I’m doing with.
That is the big question right now. There is still no clear timeline for the 2023 MVP winner. Embiid is going to wait and listen to the doctors before taking the court again for Philadelphia.
He stated on a timeline:
“I mean, not necessarily because, you know, with stuff, it’s unpredictable. You can have good days. You can have bad days. I think it will be kind of foolish for me to sit here and be like ‘Oh! I’m gonna play Tuesday’ when you don’t know. I’ll play today and if it reacts, you know? I’m still getting back in, obviously, game shape, and then still getting back to yourself. You need to feel 100%. I think over the years, I’ve done a lot and put myself at risk for the team which I’m gonna continue to do, but right now is the time to make sure that everything is great which is trending that way. It’s pretty good right now so everybody’s trending the right way and we can go on and have a long season and a great couple years.”
For now, the Sixers will continue to count on Andre Drummond to lead the way. The 2-time All-Star is averaging 9.8 points and 12.5 rebounds as he has been a good presence with Embiid out for now. Behind Drummond, the Sixers will look to Guerschon Yabusele and a combination of others to fill the void.
The Kings will be without one starter as their four-game road trip continues Saturday in Toronto. Sharpshooting guard Kevin Huerter was ruled out of
