Bengals Pregame: Looking for a win against the Steelers in Week 18
Enquirer beat reporter Kelsey Conway gives a pregame update from Pittsburgh.
Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, named a Pro Bowler earlier this week for the second time in five NFL seasons, suffered an apparent head injury during the third quarter of the NFL Week 18 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Acrisure Stadium.
Burrow landed on the football and got a facemask full of turf as he was sacked by the Steelers’ Cam Heyward and Nick Herbig. He walked off the field after staying down for several seconds.
Burrow went to the bench, then went to the blue medical tent for evaluation, reportedly for a concussion.
The independent neurological consultant (red hat) left the tent, meaning Burrow was examined for a possible head injury, per The Enquirer’s Kelsey Conway.
Burrow returned to the bench from the tent, and returned to the game when the Bengals got the ball back.
The Bengals’ Cade York kicked a 35-yard field goal on the following play, to give the Bengals a 16-7 lead.
Burrow entered Week 18 as the league leader in passing yards and touchdowns this season.
Burrow celebrated a touchdown run late in the fourth quarter of the Bengals’ NFL Week 17 win against Denver with a Griddy. Earlier in the game, Burrow became the 11th quarterback in NFL history with at least 40 TD passes in a season. In overtime, Burrow broke his own franchise single-season record for passing yards.
During a win in Dallas, Burrow appeared to be limping after his facemask was grabbed and twisted by Cowboys rookie Marist Liufau. The injury did not force Burrow out of the game. Two days later, the NFL announced it would consider employing replay assistance for facemask penalties.
During a Week 10 loss to Baltimore, the Ravens’ Marlon Humphrey wasn’t penalized for hitting Burrow late during the second half. Later, Ravens defensive lineman Nnamdi Madubuike grabbed Burrow’s facemask, but was not penalized.
During a Week 9 win against the Raiders, blood was wiped from Burrow’s neck below his ear after a hit after the whistle by Maxx Crosby. The Raiders’ defensive end was fined $11,255 for the hit.
Burrow was evaluated for a concussion during the fourth quarter of the NFL Week 6 win against the Giants.
