The outcome of the US election is also expected to play a major role in ending the conflict and any post-war settlement.

Under Donald Trump’s administration, Mr Cristal said he expected an expansion of the Abraham Accords that sought to normalise relations between Israel and Arab states.

On Friday, Trump said Sinwar’s killing made securing peace “easier”.

“If the Democrats stay in, it might delay the process,” Mr Cristal said, adding that they were stuck in the “illusion” of thinking that creating a Palestinian state would lead to peace.

“It’s the classic Clinton Obama legacy, which lacks a deeper understanding of the forces of the Middle East.”

Gabriel Noronha, a former US State Department adviser on Iran during Trump’s presidency, agreed that extraditing Hamas leaders would not advance either US or Israeli goals.

“Under Sinwar, he was the decision maker on hostage release and negotiations and at that point, having Hamas officials in Qatar made even less sense because they had no authority to act,” he told The Telegraph.

“But now, it entirely depends on who the next leader of Hamas will be and whether they are open to finally dealing constructively with Israel.”
