JJ Redick and Charles Barkley don’t see eye to eye on the reasoning behind the decline in NBA ratings. But on Friday, Redick made it incredibly clear that he doesn’t exactly care what Barkley thinks.
Last month, Redick shared his belief that at least part of the reason for the ratings decline in the NBA stems from criticism of the on-court product from broadcasters.
While Redick never mentioned any one network or group of broadcasters that he believed were directly criticizing the modern style of the NBA, Barkley seemingly saw his comments as a shot at him and the rest of the Inside the NBA cast.
On Thursday’s edition of Inside the NBA, Barkley unloaded on Redick by citing what he believes are shortcomings throughout his short coaching tenure in Los Angeles.
“He said something about, ‘What’re the reasons people ain’t watching this crappy product we got,’ like we out there jacking up a hundred threes a night,” Barkley said. “JJ, you come for the king you better not miss, because I can get you, brother. Remember I got your Lakers’ games. You can’t hide them flaws they got. You just a dead man walking. They got rid of Frank Vogel who did a good job. They got rid of Darvin Ham who did a good job. You came out there thinking you were gonna change things with that same ugly girl you went on a date with. He came in there thinking, ‘I can make this thing work.’ Hell you can! Put some makeup on that pig! The Lakers stink, man.”
In his rant, Barkley essentially proved Redick’s point, criticizing the number of three-point shots in the NBA. But regardless, Barkley’s true feelings about Redick as an NBA coach were put on display for all to hear.
On Friday ahead of the Lakers’ matchup against the Atlanta Hawks, Redick spoke with reporters where he was asked about Barkley’s comments about him. Redick detailed how he “didn’t make it all the way” through the clip and “doesn’t care” what he had to say.
“Yeah, I read a text from somebody after the game,” said Redick. “I went and looked at my phone and it said something about Charles Barkley. But Greg (St. Jean) and Beau (Levesque) showed me. I didn’t make it all the way through the clip. I gotta be honest with you. My resting heart rate is probably 64. I watched the clip, it was 64. Literally don’t care. I have other thoughts, but don’t care.”

In Redick’s defense, the Lakers certainly could be worse, sitting at 19-14 on the year, which is slightly above middle of the road in the Western Conference. So Barkley’s criticisms certainly seem to be more driven by his anger than truly believing that the Lakers “stink.”
Regardless, Redick seemingly couldn’t care less about what Barkley has to say about him individually or the Lakers as a team. Even if it means that he and his team may remain public enemy number one of Barkley’s on Inside the NBA for the remainder of the season.
