Jim Harbaugh has gone Hollywood.
The Los Angeles Chargers head coach stars in a new commercial, which debuted during the Monday Night Football broadcast on ESPN. The 60-second advertisement for Perplexity, an AI-powered search engine, features Harbaugh in a familiar setting – answering questions at a press conference.
The former Michigan coach’s eccentric personality is on display as reporters rapid-fire questions at Harbaugh.
“Jim, do you think humidity impacted the gameplay in the first half?”
He responded, “Um, I should know this” before a long pause. The 60-year-old then took a drink out of a water bottle with the Perplexity logo before finishing his answer: “Yes, extreme humidity exerts a discernible influence on the aerodynamics of a football, so yes, humidity impacted gameplay today.”
Harbaugh, personating the role of the search engine, also was asked how many times a pro players return two kickoffs for a touchdown in the same game, which two ancient civilizations fought in the Punic wars and where great ramen can be found in Tokyo?
While coaching Michigan, Harbaugh once referred to chickens as a “nervous bird” but later changed his stance and raised several at his home in Ann Arbor. In the commercial, a reporter asks, “Is a chicken actually a nervous bird as you said?”
He also was asked what the slang word “bet” is all about – a reference to the Wolverines’ mantra during the team’s final games last season when he was suspended for violating the Big Ten sportsmanship policy in relation to the ongoing NCAA investigation into alleged impermissible advanced scouting.
“It’s an informal way of saying, “OK” or “alright,” he answered in the advertisement.
When players learned of his three-game suspension to close the regular season, several started posting “bet” on social media to let people know they would be locked-in on proving their doubters wrong the rest of the season.
The Chargers won their season opener on Sunday in Harbaugh’s first game in the NFL since 2014, beating the Las Vegas Raiders 22-10. The full commercial can be watched here.
The Eagles have more yards (174-124), more first downs (11-6), more plays (42-26) and a better time of possession (18:29-11
