Jeeno Thitikul, a 21-year old, four-year veteran of the LPGA Tour, won the largest prize in women’s golf history Sunday as she overcame a two-shot deficit on the final two holes to defeat Angel Yin in the season-ending round in Naples, Fla.
Thitikul placed first in the CME Group Tour Championship at the Tiburon Golf Club with her second straight day of shooting an eagle-birdie finish on the last two holes of the round. The Thai native shot a 7-under-65 Sunday to close the week at 22-under par, one shot ahead of 26-year old American Angel Yin. The duo were tied going onto the 18th green in Naples, with Yin missing a 15-foot birdie putt while Thitikul was able to sink her 5-foot putt to seal the victory, according to ESPN.
The $4 million prize money is the biggest prize money in women’s golf history, part of an $11 million pot offered by CME Group, an owner of securities exchanges. Yin as the runner-up won $1 million. The rest of the pot consisted of prizes of declining amounts awarded to golfers, to $55,000 for 60th place.
Thitikul already had clinched a $1 million bonus this week through the Aon Risk-Reward Challenge, a competition based on how players score on a designated hole each week. In the end, it wound up as a whopping $5 million week for her.
Based on career finish information on the LPGA website, Thitikul likely exceeded her career winnings with her performance at Tiburon Sunday. She earned $1.54 million in 2023, which included two runner-up finishes, and $2.2 million in 2022. No prize money was listed for 2021, her first year on the tour, a year in which she had three top-five finishes, according to the LPGA.
Last week the LPGA and CME Group signed a two-year extension of the sponsorship agreement, now running through 2027. The CME Group has been a sponsor of the LPGA final since 2011 and in recent years the LPGA and CME have branded the season-long qualification for Sunday’s final as the “Race to the CME Globe.”
