Jannik Sinner helps Italian tennis break new record as the 2024 season ends

Jannik Sinner was undoubtedly Italy’s leading man in 2024, but plenty of his compatriots weighed in superbly.

Sinner could face a ban after the Australian Open following his doping case, which would have certainly distracted him throughout the 2024 season.

But that didn’t stop him from winning a stunning eight titles, including the Australian Open and US Open.

Sinner is a hard-court master, with the Italian certain to add to his success on the surface in the coming years.

He will already be eyeing a strong start to 2025 with an Australian Open title defence, having ended the latest season sitting very top of the world rankings.

But he wasn’t the only Italian to have stepped up in 2024, with nine players from the nation finishing the season in the ATP top 100.

And as per the Italian tennis federation, it represents the first time that Italy has finished a season with so many players in the top 100.

Sinner leads the way in the number one spot, with Lorenzo Musetti clinching 17th place after his impressive campaign.

Flavio Cobolli (32nd), Matteo Berrettini (34th), Matteo Arnaldi (37th) and Luciano Darderi (44th) meanwhile all finished inside the top 50.

Italy confirmed as new Davis Cup Finals host

Completing the record are Lorenzo Sonego in 53rd place, with Fabio Fognini and Luca Nardi in 91st and 92nd respectively.

Remarkably, the nation’s success in the last 12 months wasn’t limited to the men’s game, with Italy’s women also really enjoying their time on the court.

Jasmine Paolini improved most on the WTA Tour, having reached the French Open and Wimbledon finals as well as securing a career-high ranking of fourth.

She then starred as Italy won the Billie Jean King Cup, which coincided with the men winning the Davis Cup.

Fittingly, the country has just been confirmed as the new host of the latter tournament, while Italy also already hosts the ATP Finals.
