Jane Fonda has always been ahead of her time. From revolutionizing women’s fitness in the 1980s to staying active well into her late 80s, she continues to prove that age is no barrier to good health.
The Hollywood icon, known for her bestselling Jane Fonda’s Workout series, remains as committed to exercise as she was decades ago.
Now, at 87, she appears in a new series with Supernatural, a Meta-owned fitness service, bringing the same energy and enthusiasm she had when she released her first workout video in 1982.
Secret behind her incredible fitness
Fonda believes in consistency. She still continues with the same exercise program she had during the 1980s, but now at a slower pace. In an interview with People last year, she disclosed that she was once a keen runner, but nowadays walks more, particularly in nature and on hills.
Her exercise motto is: Move every day. She exercises daily, varying the routine to suit her body.
Fonda’s fitness path started with Jane Fonda’s Workout Book, which eventually resulted in her first exercise video. She never thought it would be a worldwide phenomenon.
She remembered how, during the 1950s and 60s, women were discouraged from gaining muscle or even exercising. It changed when she met fitness instructor Leni Cazden, whose workout transformed her life. Inspired by this, Fonda studied exercise physiology and created her workout series, making fitness more accessible to women everywhere.
Inspiring generations
Her influence extended far beyond Hollywood. Fonda shared stories of women from all over the world who wrote to her, expressing how her workouts empowered them.
Her fitness mindset in today’s world
Even today, Fonda remains committed to her health. Depending on the weather, she works out indoors on a treadmill or stationary bike. In December 2024, she shared her new resolution: “I pledge to be less judgmental, expand my heart, and be more empathetic. Fitness has always been a year-round goal for me, ever since my teenage years.”
