SISSONVILLE, W.Va. – The IUP men’s golf team combined to shoot a two-under in the second round of Monday’s 36-hole opening day of the University of Charleston (W.Va.) Invitational, held at the Edgewood Country Club.
IUP is in second place following 36 holes (575; +7), four shots behind the host Golden Eagles (571; +3). IUP’s second round team score matched the lowest in the field and was one of just two team scores to come in under par across the 17-team invitational.
Gannon (579) slots third after 36 holes, followed by Davis & Elkins (584) and West Liberty (584) in fourth.
Alex Swinnerton sits in second overall individually, rising seven spots from his round one finish with an impressive three-under 68. Swinnerton played the back nine of round one at four under and carried that momentum into his second set of 18 holes.
Swinnerton (140) played the back nine of his second round at a two-under clip, adding birdies at the par five 14 and 16. The junior finished the round with six birdies and is three shots back of tournament leader Erik Ulvang (Charleston; 137).
Guillermo Salazar carded a pair of steady even par rounds, also among the top 10 individually for the Crimson Hawks in seventh place. He played his final seven holes of round two at two-under par behind birdies at 14 and 16, matching Swinnerton.
Cameron Gerue combined for a 149 behind scores of 75 and 74, slotting 33rd individually. John Olsen added scores of 75 and 76 for his day, while Ben De Castro (individual) made his IUP debut behind rounds of 75 and 77.
Jon Vinge bounced back with a big under-par second round for IUP, part of the team’s total among the top four scorers. After an outstanding NCAA National Championships performance last May, Vinge got off to a shaky start with an 83 in his first round of the season.
He eventually settled in, lowering his second round total by 14 strokes while climbing 48 spots up the individual leaderboard. Vinge’s second round was highlighted by an eagle at the par-five 16, one of the best scoring holes for IUP as a team.
