IOWA CITY, Iowa — Indiana lost to Iowa at Carver Hawkeye Arena on Saturday evening by a final score of 85-60.

The Hawkeyes led 43-33 at halftime.  Indiana was led in the game by Myles Rice with 12 points.  Oumar Ballo added 10.

Indiana (13-4, 4-2) will host Illinois on Tuesday evening in Bloomington.

THREE KEYS TO THE GAME

1. Turnovers plague the Hoosiers.  Indiana played right into Iowa’s hands with careless basketball.  The Hawkeyes aren’t a good defensive team, but they can turn turnovers into fast break points, and that’s what they try to do.  IU gave it away 16 times including 12 in the first half.  Oumar Ballo had four turnovers in the first five minutes.  Indiana’s miscues led to 24 Iowa points off turnovers, and 26 fast break points, to just 10 and two for IU, respectively.

2. Hawkeyes slice through IU defense.  It was key for Indiana to slow down Iowa’s greatest strength, three-point shooting.  But the Hawkeyes made 11-of-24 from long range and shot 54.2% for the game overall.  Iowa scored 1.25 point per possession.  Iowa’s two best shooters, Josh Dix and Payton Sandfort, combined to go 8-of-14 from deep.  Indiana was slow to locate them in transition, and consistently gave them too much room to get off shots.

3. No show from the starters.  Iowa outscored IU the first five minutes of the first half 15-4, and the first five minutes of the second half, 15-5.  Indiana opened the game with six turnovers and one made field goal.  From a plus-minus standpoint, Luke Goode was -36, Trey Galloway was -28, and Mackenzie Mgbako was -24.  It was an especially disappointing effort from this starting lineup, because Indiana was beginning to look like they were taking positive steps over the last few games.
