BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana defeated Rutgers at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall on Thursday evening by a final score of 84-74.

The Hoosiers led 41-34 at halftime.  They were led in the game by Myles Rice with 21 points.  Oumar Ballo added 17 and Mackenzie Mgbako had 16.

Indiana (11-3, 2-1) will travel to Philadelphia to face Penn State on Sunday.

THREE KEYS TO THE GAME

1. Hoosiers dominate the offensive glass.  Despite losing Malik Reneau in the opening minute, Indiana controlled the glass and rode 18 offensive rebounds to 34 second chance points.  Oumar Ballo gave the Hoosiers seven extra chances, and Anthony Leal chipped in three.  Overall, IU had a 48-36 rebounding advantage, with Ballo leading the way with 12 total boards.

2. The threes fall on this night.  With IU coming off a 1-of-20 shooting effort against Winthrop on Sunday, Rutgers threw some zone looks at the Hoosiers, daring them to shoot.  But the Hoosiers made 12-of-27 (44.4%) from long range, tying for the most makes from three in a game during Mike Woodson’s time in Bloomington.  Luke Goode, Trey Galloway and Mackenzie Mgbako all connected three times from deep.

3. Turnovers kept in check.  Indiana got through the first half with just one turnover against 10 assists.  Things weren’t as smooth in the second half, and they ended up with eight for the game.  But on the whole, the ball security was a positive on the night.  IU had twice as many assists with 16.
