IU basketball: Indiana 83 Penn State 78 — Three keys, highlights, final stats

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana defeated Penn State on Wednesday evening at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall by a final score of 83-78.

Penn State led at halftime 39-37. The Hoosiers were led in the game by Oumar Ballo with 20 points. Trey Galloway added 16.

Indiana (17-11, 8-9) will travel to the West Coast to face Washington on Saturday.

THREE KEYS TO THE GAME

1. Second half response. As they’ve done many times recently, Indiana battled in the second half from a deficit. Indiana trailed 65-60 with 8:07 left but went on a 20-8 run to finally create some separation in what was a tight game throughout. Penn State shot above 60% through the first 33 minutes of the game but made just 2-of-10 to close the game. IU made 8-of-12 to close the game.

2. Galloway leads charge from three. Fifth-year guard Trey Galloway matched his career high with four threes, including two within a 37 second span with just under six minutes left in the second half to help fuel the rally. As a team IU made 10-15 from three, their best percentage of the year. Myles Rice also delivered a clutch triple with 2:46 to go. IU moved the ball well on offense and assisted on 24 of 29 makes from the field. The shooting proficiency from beyond the arc helped offset 10 misses from the charity stripe.

3. Ballo dominant without Reneau. Indiana forward Malik Reneau was a late scratch, leaving the post responsibilities to Oumar Ballo. And he delivered with 20 points, 12 rebounds and five assists. Ballo struggled early in the game to slow down Yanic Konan Niederhauser. But the PSU 7-footer made just 2-of-6 from the field after starting 3-of-4. Ballo delivered an offensive rebound with just under a minute to go to help IU put the game away.
