STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The fatal shooting of an armed 55-year-old man by police, following a standoff in the parking lot of a Charleston shopping complex, has shaken Staten Island’s South Shore community.
The man, who allegedly pointed a gun at cops, was given multiple chances to surrender before he was fatally shot by police in the parking lot near Home Depot at 2750 Veterans Road West around 5:20 a.m., NYPD officials said during a press conference Thursday.
While some visitors to the shopping center expressed shock and growing concerns about safety on Staten Island, others viewed the fatal encounter as an unfortunate but isolated situation.
“Things are getting out of hand,” said Kevin Richardson of Huguenot. “My son just got out of the police academy, so it hits close to home.”
A woman who wished to be identified as Marrielle, a Tottenville resident who works near the scene, shared her unease with the Advance/SILive.com: “Thoughts of ‘is this safe’ never occurred to me until today. I am worried that Staten Island is overall becoming a more dangerous place to live.”

An Annadale resident, Amanda, who regularly shops at the center, expressed confidence in the area’s safety. “I feel pretty safe shopping here. I’ve never had an issue,” she said. “I believe it was an isolated incident and no cause for alarm.”
Said Lorrain Philipps of Tottenville: “It’s surprising to hear about something like this anywhere, but especially here.”
A worker from a nearby store described the shooting as shocking and unprecedented for the location. “I’m shocked that this happened here, we never have shootings happen in this parking lot,” the worker said. “It’s unfortunate and scary.”
