Israel is calling back its ceasefire negotiation team from Qatar, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said on Tuesday.
The negotiation team, which includes senior personnel from the Mossad secret service and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), is to return to Israel following a week of intensive negotiations on the release of hostages from Gaza.
The move follows recent reports of progress in the indirect negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas, fuelling hopes of an imminent breakthrough.
The United States, Egypt and Qatar are mediating between Israel and Hamas. According to Israeli information, there are still around 100 hostages in the Gaza Strip, although it is unknown how many remain alive.
The conflict in Gaza was triggered by the October 7, 2023, attacks, which saw Hamas kill some 1,200 people in Israel and abduct around 250 as hostages.
According to Palestinian figures, more than 45,300 people have since been killed in the coastal strip.
