‘Is that legal?’ DP World Tour winner perplexes golf fans
Jacques Kruyswijk left some golf fans perplexed en route to claiming the Magical Kenya Open on the DP World Tour.
The 32-year-old South African cantered to victory on Sunday at Muthaiga Golf Club in Nairobi, finishing on 18-under par.
But his behaviour on the tee boxes, particularly with a driver in hand, had some golf fans questioning whether he was playing within the rules.
So what did he do? Well, to prevent the chief slipping out of his fingers, Kruyswijk decided to use powdered white chalk for extra grip.
“I’ve never seen that,” quipped Jamie Spencer to on-course commentator John Morgan, who remarked that Kruyswijk was built like a weightlifter.
Some golf fans on X questioned whether this was legal, while others pointed out that it was amusing that the first thing the golfer did after he put chalk on his hands was drop his club.
“Is this even within the rules?” one wrote.
Another wrote: “That took longer than AimPoint.”
This person wrote: “I’ve never seen anything like this before in a professional golf event.”

Kruyswijk finished on 18-under after 72 holes.
England’s John Parry finished solo second on 16-under par.
Former LIV Golf recruit Eugenio Chacarra finished tied 20th.
What do the rules of golf say about this?
Under Rule 4.3a(1), it states players may use equipment or substances to help with gripping the club provided it does not unduly affected the club’s performances.
Chalk, powder, resin and other grip-enhancing substances are generally permitted.
Substances that alter the club’s performance beyond grip enhancement (like making the face non-conforming) are not allowed.
