Woodbridge H.S.
Woodbridge’s boys water polo team started the season with seven consecutive victories.
“We returned a strong starting lineup from last season, with my three captains – Ben Chan (goalie), Robin Koehler (attacker) and Caden Bolton (center) – leading our team,” says coach Alex Farraro. “We have a slew of talented seniors, juniors and sophomores rounding out our squad loaded with attackers.”
The Warriors made it to CIF Division 4 finals last year, where they lost to top-seeded Bonita.
Portola H.S.
Portola High’s girls tennis team won its first six matches. The team, coached by Natasha Schottland, had victories over Corona del Mar (11‑7), Santa Margarita (6-2), Beckman (11-7) and Peninsula (10-8).
“We have a lot of juniors who have been on the team for several years,” Schottland says. Top players include Kylie Nguyen (sister of CIF 2023 individual champion Kenzie Nguyen), Leanna Roman, Payton Nguyen and a new addition from Great Britain, Imani Shah.
“Our main goal as a team is to make it far in the CIF playoffs,” Schottland says.
University H.S.
University’s girls flag football team is looking to battle defending Pacific Coast League champion Woodbridge for the league title. The Trojans stayed within striking distance of the league-leading Warriors with a 28-0 victory over Irvine.
“Our defense registered another shutout with three interceptions, and our quarterback, Carson Cruz, had three TD passes,” says Jeff Marchiorlatti, University coach. “Elyse Mills made her presence felt at running back on offense with some great runs and catches and had an interception.”
University and Woodbridge have their second league matchup at 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 14 at Woodbridge.
