Iowa State women’s basketball: The latest bracketology projections for the Cyclones

AMES – The Iowa State women’s basketball team’s resume doesn’t include any glaring losses so far this season. But the Cyclones are missing one important thing.

A signature win.

That’s a big reason why Iowa State remains on the bubble in some of the most recent NCAA Tournament projections, including ESPN women’s basketball guru Charlie Creme’s latest post released Tuesday afternoon.

As things stand now, Iowa State (15-7, 6-3 Big 12) would be among the last four teams in the NCAA Tournament, according to Creme’s projection. It’s a somewhat surprising slide for the Cyclones, who once appeared to be a sure bet to get into the Big Dance before the season started.

Iowa State was a preseason too-10 team in both the Associated Press and USA TODAY Sports Network Coaches poll. The Cyclones were also picked to finish second in the Big 12. But some early season struggles slid Iowa State down and eventually out of the rankings. But the Cyclones have gained much-needed momentum recently, winning six out of their last seven games.

Still, the Cyclones need a big-time win to enhance their resume. The team is 0-4 against ranked opponents this season, getting pummeled by South Carolina, UConn and West Virginia. They let a late lead disappear at Iowa. More importantly, the Cyclones are 0-5 against Quad 1 opponents.

The Cyclones take on two ranked opponents in three days this week. They travel to No. 11 Kansas State on Thursday and then host No. 9 TCU on Sunday. Either of those victories would give the Cyclones the big victory their resume is missing.
