IOWA CITY- Kenzie Hare’s first season with the Iowa State women’s basketball team has come to an unexpected and early end.
Iowa State announced Wednesday that Hare would miss the remainder of the season due to an ongoing hip injury after exhausting conservative treatment options.
Hare, a 5-foot-9 junior guard, will medically redshirt this season. The announcement came hours before the Cyclones were scheduled to play in-state rival Iowa.
“Kenzie has made an amazing impact from day one,” Iowa State coach Bill Fennelly said in a statement announcing the news. “I am disappointed for her and our team, but this is the best thing for Kenzie. I know she will come back better than ever and have a huge impact on our team.”
Hare has appeared in all 10 games this season for Iowa State, making eight starts for the Cyclones. She averaged 8.3 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game.
She transferred to Iowa State after spending two seasons at Marquette, where she averaged 14.0 points, 2.4 assists and 2.1 rebounds while starting 31-of-32 games as a sophomore.
Hare was expected to play a major role for the Cyclones this season as a dangerous 3-point shooter. She led her team in 3-pointers as a freshman and ranked first in the Big East from beyond the arc as a sophomore.
“Due to an ongoing hip injury, we have decided it’s best for me and the team that I redshirt this year,” Hare said in the statement. “I look forward to supporting my teammates the remainder of this season and for my next two seasons as a Cyclone!”
