Iowa football: Five-star specialist Scott Starzyk decommits from Hawkeyes’ 2025 class

IOWA CITY — Class of 2025 specialist Scott Starzyk has decommitted from Iowa football, he announced via social media Monday.

“I want to thank the University of Iowa and especially Coach (LeVar) Woods and Coach (Kirk) Ferentz for the opportunity to play football for the Hawkeyes,” Starzyk said in a post. “However, I’m officially decommitting from the University of Iowa.”

Starzyk is the No. 1 ranked kicker and No. 6 ranked punter in the class, according to Kohl’s Kicking. He is regarded as a five-star in both categories by Kohl’s Kicking.

He planned to go to Iowa as a kicker but also be available to punt when necessary. Barring something unforeseen, the Hawkeyes are well set at punter with Rhys Dakin, who is currently just a freshman.

Starzyk, a product of The Woodlands High School in Texas, picked the Hawkeyes over other offers from Mississippi State, Syracuse, Texas A&M and Oklahoma, among others. Iowa offered Starzyk a full-ride scholarship, which is something it doesn’t always do for high school specialist prospects. He took a visit to Iowa in June and committed in July.

Starzyk had attributed staff stability as part of his decision to commit to the Hawkeyes. Iowa special teams coordinator LeVar Woods, who has been on staff in various capacities for more than a decade, is part of that.

“He’s obviously one of the best special teams coordinators in the country,” Starzyk said of Woods in July. “… I think he can help get me to that next level.”

Iowa now doesn’t have an heir apparent to kicker Drew Stevens, who has one season of college eligibility remaining after 2024. The Hawkeyes also have placekicker Tripp Woody, who joined the program as a preferred walk-on.
