In a tragic turn of events, 39-year-old Derek Sink, who was reported missing by family members, was found dead in a tanning bed at an Indianapolis Planet Fitness on Monday morning—three days after he first entered the gym.
Sink’s body was discovered around 9 a.m., approximately four hours after the gym opened, according to Indianapolis Star reports citing police records.
Elizabeth Len, a gym visitor, told WTHR she noticed a “foul smell” throughout the building before staff found Sink’s body in the tanning area.
“The tanning bed has a door, I believe, but still, why are we not concerned that the tanning bed has been closed for three days, potentially?” she asked.
The fitness center’s hours indicate it closes at 9 p.m. on Fridays and operates on reduced weekend hours, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Sink was reported missing after family lost contact with him on Friday. His family shared that he had a history of drug issues, and a needle was reportedly found in the tanning bed room.
Sink was wearing an ankle monitor, which allowed authorities to track his movements leading up to his death, according to a family member.
Planet Fitness issued a statement expressing sorrow over the incident, saying, “We were deeply saddened by the passing of one of our members, and the franchise owner is working with the local authorities in their investigation.”
The company emphasized its commitment to member safety, adding, “At Planet Fitness, we have robust operational brand protocols in place, as the safety and well-being of our members is our top priority.”
Although the cause of death remains undetermined, authorities have stated that foul play is not suspected. The Indianapolis community mourns the loss of Sink, remembered by his family as a loving individual, as investigations continue.
