Indiana football will meet Notre Dame for the first time in more than 30 years as they start the first 12-team version of the College Football Playoff.
The Hoosiers (11-1) have made a meteoric rise in coach Curt Cignetti‘s first season, which has yielded many national Coach of the Year honors. The Fighting Irish (11-1) bounced back from an early home loss to Northern Illinois to earn a spot in the field.
Kurtis Rourke (70.4% completions, 2,827 yards, 27 touchdowns, 4 interceptions) leads IU’s offense, while Riley Leonard (66.2% completions, 2,092 yards, 16 TDs, 5 INTs; 14 rushing TDs) pilots Notre Dame.
Notre Dame safety Xavier Watts is a first-team All-American, while Indiana pass rusher Mikail Kamara and cornerback D’Angelo Ponds have been named to honor teams.

Rece Davis, ESPN: Notre Dame wins
“I think Notre Dame’s going to win the game, and if Notre Dame wins this game, with Georgia a little bit uncertain, we’ll see what the situation is with Carson Beck, I think Notre Dame can go on a run here. If Notre Dame can get past this one, I can see Notre Dame running this thing out and potentially even playing for the national championship.”
Pete Fiutak, College Football News: Notre Dame 27-23
“Notre Dame will get the IU pacing down, the stops will come, and the running game will start to work as the game goes on. It won’t be easy, but once Leonard settles in with his legs as well as his arm, the offense will start to move.
“On the other side, the Notre Dame defensive front will take over in the fourth quarter with more and more pressure forcing IU field goals instead of touchdowns.”
James Parks, SI Fan Nation: Notre Dame by more than one touchdown
“We’ve already seen how this Hoosiers team looks against a quality Power Four opponent when they got shellacked by Ohio State, and the Irish can bring the same pressure up front while testing Indiana’s secondary with an arsenal of proven skill targets.”
ESPN’s matchup predictor gives Notre Dame a 70.5% chance of winning.
