PORTER, Ind. (WSBT) — The new government efficiency strategy by Elon Musk has been affecting government employees nationwide, even at Indiana Dunes National Park.
“But my employers or my supervisors told me that I was an exemplary employee and there was no reason to be let go,” said Beth Shrader, former National Park Service Worker.
Shrader lost her job along with many other Americans.
Cuts by Musk’s new Government Efficiency system forced Shrader and some of her co-workers to lose their position.
Shrader said her supervisor was asked for probationary employees who the National Park Service wants to retain.
“And then very quickly it was reversed from because you were doing a good job in your position, they can’t fire you, to a tearful phone call from my supervisor saying that OPM was going to fire all of us and we were going to get some notice of that later in the day,” said Shrader.
Shrader said she left a higher paying job as the Planning Transit Director with the city of Valparaiso for this position.
With Shrader’s division already understaffed, she believes these changes will make it even harder on the National Park Service.
“I do know that there are over a thousand that were let go probationary employees across the park service. I have friends in Indiana Dunes National Park and a friend of mine had to let go three of her employees because they were probationary employees on Friday too. So, I know she’s heart sick and it’s just unfair,” said Shrader
The future is unknown for Shrader and her family of three children.
Along with her personal impact of losing health benefits this Friday, Shrader said these layoffs could have long lasting effects moving forward.
“It’s gonna be, it’s gonna be terrible for our parks long-term,” said Shrader.
Shrader is confident she will find other opportunities in the near future.
