Indiana basketball struggled mightily last week in Battle 4 Atlantis, owning double-digit losses against Louisville and Gonzaga before salvaging its Bahamas trip with a win over Providence. The Hoosiers missed a significant opportunity to gain a marquee non-conference win and will need to bounce back in a significant way before Big Ten play begins.
On Monda7 night, Indiana head coach Mike Woodson joined Don Fischer for his weekly radio show, ‘Inside IU Basketball’. Woodson detailed IU’s poor performances in the Bahamas, his concern level with the team, how he plans to fix many of the issues, thoughts on individual players and much more.
All notes and quotes are per Woodson, unless otherwise noted. Below are the full show notes.
OVERALL THOUGHTS ON BATTLE 4 ATLANTIS:
– “It was a great atmosphere for all the guys. The night before we kicked off the week, there was a big dinner for all the teams. We all shared a big dinner together. Coaches were introduced.”
– Woodson says there wasn’t much down time to do off-court activities. Each team had a similar itinerary with the three-game schedule.
– “We didn’t play particularly well in the first two games. I mean, It was a disaster. We didn’t see that coming.”
– “You’ve gotta give those two teams, Louisville and Gonzaga — they played great. We basically played a half in each game.”
– “We can’t have games where we’re not putting two halves together, especially against good teams.”
– “Hopefully it’s a learning lesson.”
– Woodson says Indiana did not fix its issues quick enough from the Louisville game to Gonzaga game.
– Fischer notes Oklahoma surprised many by winning the tournament … “That’s why we went there. That’s why we played Tennessee in a practice. You’ve got to test your team to see where you are.”
ON INDIANA’S LOSS VS. LOUISVILLE:
– Woodson notes Indiana trailed by only seven points at halftime, but gave up 57 points in a runaway second half.
– “Everything that could go wrong, went wrong.”
– “We really got popped (in the mouth) in the second half.” … “We fell apart. As a coach, it’s hard to explain it, but it’s still my job to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
– Woodson says the team charted giving up 26 layups to Louisville and missing 26 layups of their own.
ON INDIANA’S LOSS VS. GONZAGA:
– “We gave up 57 points in the first half and then settled down and played good Indiana basketball and gave up 32 points in the second half.”
– “Came out at halftime, regrouped and I thought we played really good basketball, which was a good sign for us carrying into the Providence game.”
ON INDIANA’S WIN VS. PROVIDENCE:
– “I thought we responded against Providence. It was scrappy, but I thought we did a lot of good things on both ends of the floor to get back to playing pretty good basketball.”
– Re: Trey Galloway … Woodson says this past week was the first time he’s been able to play Galloway big minutes … “I thought in the Providence game we saw the old Gallo from last season, and we’re going to need that going forward.”
– “I thought in the Providence game, when you look at Gallo and what Mgbako did and then Goode coming off the bench and making shots, too, that’s the kind of play we got to have.”
– Woodson says Rice “didn’t play particularly well” but had a “good floor game” against Providence in terms of running the offense and creating shots for others.
ON CURRENT TEAM MORALE:
– Fischer asks if there’s any frustration from the players … “No, not at all, Don. You make that comment sound like we’re totally out of it, we’re not.”
– “We’re 5-2 and we got a lot of basketball left. Frustration shouldn’t be set in. You should be frustrated with how we played those two games, but we played well in the Providence game, we brought a win home, and now we got to get ready for Sam Houston.”
– “Frustration shouldn’t be set in. If you are frustrated, then take it out on the court. But no, I don’t think that’s the case, got too many games left to play.”
– “It’s still a long way to go, and it’s too early to throw in the towel. I’ll never do that. We’ve got a good team, and we just got to get them believe in one another and play as a team.”
ON CURRENT TEAM PERFORMANCE:
– “Everybody’s so new. Every team has new players. You’re trying to get them to play the style of basketball that you look and play hard every possession that you’re on the floor.”
– “A lot of the coaches that I talk to, they’re complaining too. But at the end of the day, I’ve got to worry about our team and get us ready to play on a nightly basis.”
– “A lot of these guys are new, they’ve played in various places, and everything we’re doing is a little bit different than where they played before. So we’ve just got to continue to build and get guys comfortable in what we’re doing.”
– “There’s still a lot of moving pieces in terms of what we’re trying to get accomplished, but it’s still a long season and we still got to take it a game and a practice at a time and see where it leads us.”
– “You don’t want to lose games like we lost the first two games. If you walk away from them games saying you were truly competitive in them, you would feel really good about it. But right now, we still have a ways to go as a ball club.”
ON INDIANA’S GUARD PLAY CURRENTLY:
– Woodson says Myles Rice “hit a wall” in the Bahamas after previously playing well to start the season.
– “I thought Kanaan played well defensively, but we didn’t get any perimeter shot-making in the first two games. I mean, if you look at the (shooting) stats, it was a ridiculous number.”
– “I’ve made it very clear — and they understand, I’m hoping they understand, it’s my job to make them understand — that we do need to have perimeter play.”
– “We can’t have a trail of guys not producing for us in order to win.”
– Re: Gabe Cupps’ lack of minutes … “He’s struggling in terms of his health, too. He really hasn’t practiced a lot in the last week and a half, and has tried to come to the games dressed and ready to go. We’re gauging him as well. If you can’t practice, it’s tough to throw him in a game and just say play.”
– Re: Anthony Leal … Woodson says he’s back healthy and ready to play.
ON INDIANA’S PLAYER LEADERSHIP:
– Woodson highlights Trey Galloway, Anthony Leal, Malik Reneau and Oumar Ballo as players that he expects to lead due to their experience.
– Re: Luke Goode … “You hear his voice constantly, which is a good thing because I wish I could get everybody to talk like Goode does, but that has not been the case.”
– Re: Lack of on-court communication … “Yeah, it’s a part of it… We gotta create practice more like game situations, which we’re trying to do, so when you get to the game it’s not a big shock.”
ON INDIVIUDAL PLAYERS:
– Re: Kanaan Carlyle … Carlyle did not play in the third game against Providence due to injury .. Woodson says he hasn’t practiced since the team returned from the Bahamas, won’t played Tuesday night against Sam Houston State.
– Re: Jakai Newton … Woodson says Newton pulled his hamstring earlier in the season which has sidelined him in recent games. Has participated in practice over the last two days … “His knee has been feeling great for him. That was the big problem for him last season and coming into this season. But he’s had these little nagging injuries.”
– Re: Landon Hatton … “He performed extremely well for us (in the Bahamas). He was one of the bright spots. Being a big, he held his own, did a lot of good things when he was out on the floor.”… “I’m not opposed to playing him. He’s earned that right to be thrown into the game. Based on personnel and how things are going, I think he’s earned the right to be thrown into the game.”
– Re: Oumar Ballo … Woodson says IU has started to utilize Mgbako and Goode alongside one big a lot more recently … “We’ll continue to experiment with it a little, but the small ball with one of those bigs in the game has been pretty good, we’ve charted that.”
MISCELLANEOUS NOTES:
– Woodson says rebounding “has been a major problem” for Indiana.
– Fischer notes Indiana is shooting 78% at the free-throw line, was around 66% last season … “It’s the best since I’ve been here as a coach at the free throw line… There’s guys that can make free throws, we just got to get them (to the line.)”
– Re: Oumar Ballo switching FT shooting hands … Woodson says Calbert Cheaney really helped Ballo with the hand switch … “He’s shooting it better than he ever has, and I’m really happy to see that.”
