India have named a 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which will be held in Pakistan and the UAE from February 19 to March 9.
Barring one change, the same Indian men’s cricket team, announced by captain Rohit Sharma and chief selector Ajit Agarkar at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai on Saturday, will also play in the preceding ODI series against England.
India will host England for three ODI matches on February 6, 9 and 12. Since Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness for the matches against England is still uncertain, Harshit Rana will be in the squad as backup for the three-match series.
While Rohit Sharma will continue to lead the Indian cricket team both against England and in the Champions Trophy, Shubman Gill has been chosen as the vice-captain of the team.
Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, meanwhile, has been handed his maiden ODI call-up. The 22-year-old southpaw enjoyed a breakthrough year in 2024 and emerged as India’s top run getter in Tests, scoring 1478 runs in 15 matches at an average of over 50.
Only Joe Root scored more than Jaiswal in Tests last year.
Into its eighth edition, the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy is set to return after an eight-year-long hiatus.
Defending champions Pakistan will be the primary hosts for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 with matches scheduled in Lahore, Karachi and Rawalpindi.
Pakistan will be hosting its first major global tournament since the ODI World Cup in 1996.
UAE, meanwhile, was confirmed as the neutral venue with Dubai hosting all the India matches.
This year, the top eight ODI teams will be competing for the honours and have been divided into two groups. After single-headed round-robin matches, the top two from each group will advance to the semi-finals.
India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and New Zealand make up Group A while Afghanistan, Australia, England and South Africa are in Group B.
The Indian cricket team will start its Champions Trophy campaign against Bangladesh on February 20 before facing off against arch-rivals Pakistan in a blockbuster clash on the 23rd.
