As the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 gathers momentum, former Australia captain Steve Waugh weighed in on the tournament’s top contenders while attending the Laureus Sport for Good Mental Health and Wellbeing Forum in Hong Kong China.

With India, New Zealand and South Africa making strong starts, Waugh identified key threats in the competition. “India, in these conditions, are favourites. New Zealand have a very strong squad. You can never underestimate Australia – they’re always competitive in big tournaments. England and Pakistan are also very capable,” the Aussie legend said.

The much-anticipated India-Pakistan showdown on Sunday, promises to be the highlight of the Champions Trophy 2025. While reigning champions Pakistan enter the contest after a defeat, the Indian cricket team will be looking to build on their opening victory.

“It’s more than a cricket match – it’s a massive global event,” Waugh stated. “Whenever these two teams meet, the atmosphere is electric, and the outcome is unpredictable. Both have immense talent. India are favourites but white-ball cricket is unpredictable – one player can change the game in an instant.”

Waugh singled out India’s in-form opener Shubman Gill, fresh off a century, alongside Virat Kohli as key players to watch.

“Pakistan have been inconsistent over the last year. They’re capable of brilliance but you never know which Pakistan side will show up. India should win but Pakistan pulling off an upset would not shock me.”

On Australia’s prospects, Waugh acknowledged the challenge of missing key pacers Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood.

“They’ve been the backbone of our bowling for a decade, so it’s a big test. But it’s an opportunity for guys like Spencer Johnson and Sean Abbott. Adam Zampa has been a consistent performer, and Steve Smith’s leadership experience will be crucial,” he noted. “There’s talent, but this will test our depth. We’ll see who steps up,” he added.

Waugh was among a global assembly of sports legends at the Laureus Sport for Good Mental Health & Wellbeing Forum, supported by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.

The forum featured Olympic and world champions, including Chinese speed skating legend Yang Yang, eight-time squash world champion Nicol David, double Olympic cycling gold medallist Victoria Pendleton and former English football manager Sean Dyche.
