Shubman Gill’s composed century and Mohammed Shami’s fifer propelled India to a six-wicket victory over Bangladesh in their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Group A opener at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Thursday.
Asked to field first, the Indian men’s cricket team restricted Bangladesh to 228 in 49.4 overs. India, led by Gill’s unbeaten 101 off 129, chased down the target in 46.3 overs.
The win placed India second in the Group A table with two points and a net run rate (NRR) of 0.408. New Zealand, who won their match against Pakistan on Wednesday, are on top with two points and an NRR of 1.200.
India will face arch-rivals Pakistan in their next Champions Trophy 2025 clash at the same venue on Sunday.
The Men in Blue started their chase positively with openers Rohit Sharma and Gill putting on 69 runs in 59 balls.
Rohit played fluently for his 36-ball 41 before skying a delivery from Taskin Ahmed in the 10th over.
However, before he walked back, Rohit had already become the fourth Indian to score 11,000 ODI runs after Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Virat Kohli. The Indian captain is also the 10th batter to hit the milestone in ODIs globally.
Virat Kohli (22) looked set before falling to Rishad Hossain in the 23rd over with India at 112/2.
Bangladesh kept themselves in the hunt with wickets of Shreyas Iyer (15) and Axar Patel (8) in the middle overs.
However, from 144/4 in the 31st over, Indian vice-captain Gill and wicket-keeper batter KL Rahul combined for an unbeaten 87-run partnership to guide India home with more than three overs to spare.
Gill’s seventh ODI century featured nine boundaries and two maximums. KL Rahul finished with an unbeaten (41 off 47 balls).
Earlier, Bangladesh endured a difficult start after electing to bat and were reduced to 35/5 inside nine overs.
Shami set the tone by dismissing Soumya Sarkar in the opening over before getting the wicket of Mehidy Hasan Miraz in the seventh.
Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto, Tanzid Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim all departed cheaply as Bangladesh failed to cope with India’s disciplined attack.
Axar Patel almost had a hat-trick in the game but was denied after Rohit dropped Jaker Ali at first slip.
Towhid Hridoy and Jaker Ali then produced a stunning recovery, adding 154 runs for the sixth wicket – the highest stand by a Bangladeshi pair against India in ODIs.
Hridoy’s 100 off 118 balls, laced with six fours and two sixes, kept Bangladesh in the contest while Jaker contributed a gritty 68.
While India’s spinners, Ravindra Jadeja (0/37) and Kuldeep Yadav (0/43), went wicketless, Shami returned in the 43rd over to break the partnership and removed Jaker to shift the momentum back in India’s favour.
The pacer then dismissed Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Taskin Ahmed to finish with 5/53 in 10 overs, becoming India’s highest wicket-taker in 50-over ICC events.
With 60 wickets, Shami went past Zaheer Khan’s previous record of 59 wickets in 32 innings. Shami crossed the mark in just his 19th inning.
The pacer also became the fastest Indian (in terms of deliveries bowled) to complete 200 ODI wickets (in 5126 balls).
