Hubert Davis isn’t leaving Chapel Hill anytime soon.
The fourth-year North Carolina men’s basketball coach has signed a contract extension through the 2029-30 season with the Tar Heels. It was first reported by Brian Murphy of WRAL5 News, a local NBC affiliate in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Tuesday’s news of the former Tar Heel player and assistant coach’s extensions comes at an interesting time in the men’s college basketball season, as North Carolina is on the cusp of missing out on the NCAA Tournament for the second time under Davis.
Another oddity to it is that Davis and UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham signed the contract extension on Dec. 4 — the same day that UNC lost to then-No. 10 Alabama in the ACC/SEC challenge — according to a contract obtained by the USA Today Network.
In his four seasons at North Carolina, Davis has led the Tar Heels to a 96-42 overall record and 54-23 record in ACC play. The Tar Heels have advanced past the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament just once under Davis, which came during his first season after taking over for Roy Williams. In that year, Davis knocked off arch-rival Duke in the Final Four in what was Mike Krzyzewski’s final game.
At 18-11 overall on the season, North Carolina is 4.5 games back of No. 2 Duke in the ACC standings at 11-6 in conference play. Next up for North Carolina, who beat Florida State on Monday, is a noon ET tip-off against Miami at home inside the Dean E. Smith Center on Saturday, March 1.
Here’s what you need to know about Davis’ contract extension details:
In a contract obtained by the USA Today Network, Davis’ contract extension is two years added onto his previous contract, which was set to run through the 2027-28 season.
He will earn a base salary of $1.25 million and supplementary compensation will start at $1.7 million and increase by $400,000 and $100,000 each year of his contract respectively. His near-average income of $3 million (base salary and supplemental pay) is a $2 million increase from his previous contract per the Fayetteville Observer.
Here’s a breakdown of Davis’ bonuses in his contract:
