The No. 4 ranked South Carolina women’s basketball team finds itself in an unfamiliar position coming into Thursday’s game against No. 15 Iowa State at the Fort Myers Tip-Off.
The Gamecocks (5-1) saw their 43-game winning streak end Sunday at UCLA with the Bruins dominating the defending NCAA champions wire-to-wire in a 77-62 victory. It marked South Carolina’s first loss since the 2023 Final Four and vaulted UCLA (5-0) into the No. 1 spot in the Associated Press Top 25.
Te-Hina Paopao and Tessa Johnson combined for 32 points and six 3-pointers but it wasn’t nearly enough for the Gamecocks, who were held to only 18 points in the paint and were outrebounded 41-34.
The Cyclones (5-1) also dropped their first game of the season last week, falling 87-75 at unranked Northern Iowa. Audi Crooks led Iowa State with 22 points while Addy Brown had 21.
Iowa State bounced back with an 80-78 win at Drake on Sunday, its last game before heading to Fort Myers to take on South Carolina.
