What Cleveland Cavs expect in rematch vs. playoff foe Boston Celtics
Here’s what unbeaten Cleveland Cavaliers players expect to gain from a rematch with the defending NBA champion and playoff nemesis Boston Celtics.
The 15-0 Cleveland Cavaliers have already etched their names into both franchise and league history with a stellar, undefeated start.
Cleveland became just the fourth team in NBA history to start a season 15-0 with a win over the Charlotte Hornets Sunday night. It’s their best start in franchise history as well as their longest win streak all-time for the organization.
The Cavs offense is humming under new head coach Kenny Atkinson. At the time of writing, Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland and Co. lead the league in points per game (123.7), field goal percentage (52.4%) and average point differential (+12.2).
If they want to reach a 16-0 mark, though, they’ll have to go through a familiar playoff foe.
The Cavs play their next game against the reigning champion Boston Celtics Tuesday night. The Celtics are 11-3 and sit second in the Eastern Conference standings behind the undefeated Cavs. They dispatched Cleveland 4-1 in the Eastern Conference semifinals of the 2024 playoffs, eventually making it all the way to the Larry O’Brien Trophy.
In addition to this being a meeting between the top two squads in the Eastern Conference — with an unblemished record on the line for the Cavs — the game between Cleveland and Boston is also an NBA Cup matchup.
Heading into the game, the Cavs are 1-0 in NBA Cup play with a +18 point differential (which is important in the NBA Cup format for possible tiebreakers). The Celtics, meanwhile, are 0-1 in NBA Cup play having lost their first in-season tournament matchup to the Atlanta Hawks by one point on Nov. 12.
Short of the NBA Cup championship game, this is as marquee a showdown as fans are likely to see during the NBA regular season.
Here’s how fans can tune in.
The Cavs and Celtics face off at 7 p.m. ET Tuesday, Nov. 19.
The game will be televised on TNT.
In addition to being broadcast on TNT, fans can stream the matchup using the Max (previously HBO) app with a subscription login.
Fans with an NBA League Pass subscription can also stream the game there, though blackout restrictions may apply.
