MELBOURNE — The final match of the women’s draw at the Australian Open sees one player trying to etch her name into history, while the other is seeking her first Grand Slam title.
(1) Aryna Sabalenka vs. (19) Madison Keys
Sabalenka is on a path to becoming the first woman to win three consecutive Australian Open championships since Swiss star Martina Hingis accomplished the feat in 1999. Sabalenka has been playing exceptional as fans in Melbourne have grown to know over the past couple of years. The Belarussian has lost just one set so far in the tournament, that coming in the quarterfinals against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. In the semifinals, Sabalenka took care of Paula Badosa in straight sets to punch her ticket to a major final for the fifth time in her career.
Sabalenka is trying to win a third Grand Slam in a calendar year, as she also won it all at the U.S. Open last September.
Prior to this year, Keys had not been to a Grand Slam Final since losing to Sloane Stephens in the 2017 U.S. Open final. Since then, Keys has competed hard, but never made it beyond the semifinals.
That was, until this year, when Keys has shown plenty of grit to get through a plethora of talented players. Her last four matches have come against ranked opponents, beating the likes of Elena Rybakina and Elina Svitolina before rallying to defeat Iga Swiatek in a classic during the semifinals.
Sabalenka is 4-1 against Keys, with Sabalenka knocking Keys out of the semifinals at the 2023 U.S. Open and quarterfinals at Wimbledon that same year.
