By now, we all know the benefits of regular exercise – from better mental wellbeing to improved longevity, there’s plenty of reasons to want to get your body moving. No wonder, then, that according to a recent YouGov survey one in six Brits said they wanted to prioritise their fitness in 2025.
But here’s the thing: actually doing that exercise isn’t always easy. All too often, life gets in the way. We’re talking about that deadline you end up working late to hit, your gang’s plans *finally* making it out of the WhatsApp chat only to then clash with your Pilates class, or having to stay home all day while you wait for someone to come and fix your boiler.
While we’ve got plenty of tips to help make it easier to motivate you to exercise, like these ones from our Fitness Director, the sad truth is that many women face serious barriers to physical activity, creating a noticeable gender gap across activity levels.
As well as personal, social and cultural barriers to contend with, such as low self-confidence, a scarcity of female role models and prejudices around ethnicity, there are also manifold practical barriers women and girls face.
Personal safety, poor transport links, plus a lack of childcare, are all issues which research has shown can impact activity levels amongst women. But these barriers are much more likely to be overcome if you can workout at home.
While it obviously still takes motivation, commitment and, most importantly, time, to hit any fitness goal, we’ve teamed up with our friends at FIIT to help make that journey just a little bit easier.
