The final round of the DP World Tour Championship promised to be a thriller and fans were not disappointed at the Jumeirah Golf Estates course in Dubai.
The culmination of the Race to Dubai series featured some of golf’s top names with many of the tour’s top 50 ranked players in 2024 in action including the likes of European Ryder Cup stars Hatton, Tommy Fleetwood, Robert MacIntyre, Thorbjorn Olesen, Shane Lowry and Justin Rose.
Going into Sunday’s final round, things were tight at the top of the leaderboard as Denmark’s Rasmus Højgaard held a two stroke lead over Rory Mcllroy and three over France’s Antoine Rozner.
The Northern Irishman was hoping to bag a third consecutive championship as the contest ended into a two-horse race between the Dane and Mcllroy as the Irishman’s putting started to flag on the second nine.
However, the County Down man gathered himself and regained the lead ultimately winning by two strokes to seal a perfect end to his four rounds at the Jumeirah course.
Thanks to a calm head in Dubai, the County Down man pocketed a cool $3 million as first prize for the DP World Championship which formed part of the $10 million total purse, which made the UAE based tournament one of the most lucrative event of the year. Runner-up Højgaard walks away with the runner-up prize of $1.27 million.
McIlroy held a lead of 1,785.02 points at the top of the rankings leaderboard in the Race to Dubai, with 2,000 points available to this week’s winner. The four-time major champion won the 2024 Race to Dubai by finishing higher than 11th place than sole challenger Thriston Lawrence.
The South African needed a series of factors to work in his but, ultimately, Lawrence failed to shine in Dubai and finished with a -1 total after his four rounds leaving the Northern Irish player to scoop the Race to Dubai prize.
McIlroy, as a result now equals Seve Ballesteros’ tally of six Race to Dubai/Order of Merit wins, but is still be two behind Colin Montgomerie, who won eight times between 1993 and 2005.
