Alabama football has permanent captains this season, but Crimson Tide coach Kalen DeBoer wants more than those four to step up.

He’s made clear that the invitation to lead extends past quarterback Jalen Milroe, linebacker Deontae Lawson, guard Tyler Booker and safety Malachi Moore.

“The leaders, you know I challenged our team not just to have the leaders step up, but at this point have a team full of leaders,” DeBoer said Monday. “We can’t have, these freshmen aren’t freshmen, the new guys that are coming into this program aren’t just new guys anymore. This is our team. That’s been the message, but really for them to all raise their game as leaders.”

DeBoer said that means accountability for themselves and “then also bring someone else with you.”

“That’s been the challenge the last couple weeks and we’re going to continue to hone in on that,” DeBoer said.

The Crimson Tide finds itself in a position of needing to win out to have a shot to make the College Football Playoff. Alabama already has two losses, albeit to ranked teams in No. 7 Tennessee and No. 24 Vanderbilt.

Now, No. 11 Alabama will face No. 14 LSU on Saturday, Nov. 9 (6:30 p.m. CT, ABC) in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The winner will keep its playoff hopes alive. The loser will all but be eliminated from CFP contention.
